Freetown Rain Water Capture and Storage System

Freetown, Sierra Leone
U.S. Department of State, OBO

Project Overview

Construction of a rainwater harvesting system, pipe network, water treatment plant, and two steel water storage tanks with 900,000 gallons capacity. The rainwater harvesting portions include construction of a catchment canopy system and two raw water storage tanks. The storage tanks are 25.3 meters in diameter and 7.25 meters in sidewall height, with a combined storage capacity of approximately 6.8 million liters. Site improvements to the tank area include an access road, earthwork, and retaining wall structure. The stored raw rain water in the tanks is transferred via two (2) buried 80-mm diameter pipes from the storage tanks to the U.S. diplomatic compound where it is treated. All required mechanical work including pipes and pumps procurement and installation were performed within the scope of this task order. The project also includes improvements to the existing water treatment process, potable water storage reservoir, water reuse process and irrigation system, roadway and staff parking area improvements, Storm Pond 2 modifications, and landscape improvements.
